Bernadette “Dette” Buentipo
Dallas-native "Dette," didn't wake up one day and become a musician. Her musical journey began at the tender age of 4, where her mother, a pianist, began teaching her lessons at home. The moment her little fingers touched the keys and heard the harmonious sound, she instantly knew music had entered her life. At age 6, Dette's quick and sharp development earned her piano instruction in a college setting. At age 12, she played with the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra, an honorable opportunity that opened the door to performing in piano recitals in the Dallas area. A talented young singer as well, Dette continued to share her musical gifts to friends and family where they invited her to play piano and sing for weddings, anniversaries, receptions and birthday parties. Always embracing her Filipino heritage, she was a dedicated cantor at church and offered her voice at various Filipino celebrations. She picked up the guitar around the age of 16 and was influenced by key guitarists like John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Gabe Bondoc.
In July 2008, Dette made the move to follow the YouTube frenzy and began posting videos singing some of her favorite songs. 1 hit quickly turned into 1,000 hits. Soon after, she made a Myspace music page, featuring some of her own recordings, and was approached by Afton, a company who finds local artists and offers them live performance opportunities and resources. She was immediately booked to be an opening act at Deep Ellum's The Bone in October 2008.
Dette was inspired to write her own original songs. Traveling to great cities, learning from famous musicians and going through life's challenges and blessings, she was encouraged. Sleepless song-writing nights paid off when Dette was contacted to be booked for another show at Dallas' Opening Bell in July 2009. She performed for a packed venue and her contagious personality left her fans anxious for more. She shared the stage with her closest friends and that night, as the spotlight gleamed, Dette premiered her originals for the first time in front of a packed and silent room. A grand applause followed by a long line of loyal fans awaited.
Dette received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University in May 2009, under the instruction of a former Gold Medalist in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Dette also opened up her own private piano studio in the comfort of her own home and teaches students at Dallas Montessori Academy and Arlington's Main Street School of Music.
In July 2011, Dette was the winner of Kollaboration Houston 2! Kollaboration is the biggest Asian-American talent competition in the world.
When Dette isn't performing, she is writing. Dette continues to dig deep in her heart for meaningful lyrics and beautiful melodies capturing the essence of how beautiful music can transpire all walks of life. Her powerful, yet soothing voice will leave you wanting more.
